The City of Karratha is inviting public comment on a development proposal to deliver the first stages of the new Mulataga housing estate.
Stages 1 and 2 of the development would deliver more than 130 lots in addition to landscaped public open spaces, drainage, and fencing.
The City has been awarded $21.1m in funding from the Federal Government’s Housing Support Program to help deliver Stage 1 works and has proposed a partnership with DevelopmentWA to achieve delivery of the project.
Mulataga has capacity for 1270 residential lots and revenue generated from the first lots would support future stages ensuring a sustained pipeline of housing supply to meet the long-term needs of Karratha.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the increase in development ready land would provide a significant benefit in addressing the housing shortage.
“Our modelling indicates a current shortfall of 900 dwellings, and with major projects scheduled for completion over the next few years this shortfall could increase to 2000,” Cr Scott said.
“Mulataga is critical in providing land supply to meet the projected demand for new housing stock in our City.”
“This is an opportunity to further grow Karratha and support land supply for housing and community amenities.
“We need land to be available for residents, whether they are health care workers, hairdressers, retail workers and educators to live here for Karratha to be a sustainable and liveable City.
“A decision on whether to proceed with the project has not yet been made, and all community feedback will be considered before the Council makes a final investment decision.”
