A culinary event set at Hearson’s Cove that will boost Karratha’s development as a cultural tourism destination has received support from Council.
Created by The Storyteller Chef Zach Green, Staircase to the Moon: A Three-Year Cultural & Culinary Journey, is designed to showcase Aboriginal culture through food, art, and storytelling.
This week Council endorsed a motion to provide funding worth $27,500 through its Major Event Sponsorship and Attraction Program for the first year of the event.
Held during NAIDOC Week, the inaugural event will be a long-table dinner for 75 guests, featuring local ingredients and Indigenous cooking techniques, while Pilbara Artist Bobbi Lockyer will contribute storytelling and installations.
Chef Zach Green expects the event to develop into a three-day cultural festival by its third year including an Indigenous fashion show at Murujuga National Park, a long-table dinner for 100 guests and headline concert at Hearson Cove.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the event would boost Karratha’s development as a cultural tourism destination.
“Zach Green’s culinary approach honours his Indigenous heritage by blending traditional and contemporary techniques to create an immersive cultural experience,” Cr Scott said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the City to partner with The Storyteller Chef and support an event that celebrates and honours the deep Aboriginal cultural connection with our region.”
